Wetangula Urges Unity at General Ogolla’s Burial » Capital News
SIAYA, Kenya Apr 21 – Speaker of the National Assembly, Moses Wetang’ula has urged political leaders to set aside their differences and work together for national development at the burial of General Francis Ogolla in Siaya county.
He emphasized the importance of unity regardless of political affiliation, stating, “This county needs all of us and all of us have a role to play towards its growth,” he said.
General Ogolla, along with nine other Kenya Defence Forces Officers, died in a helicopter crash on Thursday in Elgeyo Marakwet while on duty.
He was buried on Sunday 72 hours after the death and accorded full military honours but without a coffin as per his wish.
Wetang’ula praised President William Ruto’s decision to appoint General Ogolla as Chief of the Defence Forces, calling it a significant lesson for leaders to collaborate for the nation’s benefit.
He mourned Ogolla as a gallant leader dedicated to ensuring the country’s security, saying, “We have lost a great man, a fine leader, a brilliant and a wonderful communicator.”
Reflecting on his interactions with Ogolla, Wetang’ula remembered him as a leader with clear plans and a strong vision for the country. He shared, “I had an opportunity to work with General Ogolla and his colleagues during my time in Foreign Affairs Minister over peace issue in the horn of Africa. He had clarity of mind as to what needed to be done to secure the region.”
Wetang’ula encouraged the Ogolla family to find solace in prayer, stating, “Prayers will lift their spirits and strengthen them at this moment of tragedy.” He highlighted the importance of seeking divine protection and care during challenging times.
Leaders attending the burial showered Ogolla with praise, with President Ruto commending him as a patriotic commander deserving of recognition. Ruto stated, “He was a humble, firm, and professional leader who died while serving the nation.”
The KDF leadership remembered Ogolla as a mentor and father figure, emphasizing his professionalism and dedication. Numerous dignitaries, including Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, and various MPs and senators, paid their respects at the ceremony.
