Wetang’ula calls for support in resolving DRC conflict

National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has expressed concern about the ongoing conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), emphasizing its economic and security implications for Kenya and the wider East African region.

Speaking on the matter, Wetangula highlighted that the crisis directly impacts Kenya’s trade and economic stability, given the country’s critical role in regional commerce.

Wetang’ula, a former Foreign Affairs Minister and Chair of the African Union Peace and Security Council, urged for stronger regional and international support for President William Ruto’s diplomatic efforts to address the conflict.

He called on Kenyan and regional leaders to rally behind Ruto in his pursuit of restoring peace in the troubled area.

“So I want to urge as a former foreign minister of this country, as a former chairman of the AU Peace and Security Council, the support that our president needs in the efforts he is having should be widened, extended so that there if protection of property and no compromising security in the region and undermining our economies.” He stated.

The conflict in the DRC has displaced thousands and continues to threaten regional stability, negatively affecting trade, investment, and economic growth in Kenya and the broader East African region.

Wetang’ula urged Kenyan and regional leaders to support Ruto in his capacity as Chairman of the East African Community and to engage in dialogue to alleviate the suffering of the Kenyan people.

“We urge our leaders to support the efforts of our president as a chairman of the East African Community to engage in dialogue and save the agony that our people are going through.”
