Weatherman says heavy rainfall to continue through the week

The Kenya Meteorological Department says the rainfall being experienced across the country is expected to continue over several parts of the country.

In the seven days forecast released by the Kenya Meteorological Department, flooding is expected in low-lying areas, on the flood plains as well as in urban areas with poor drainage. Landslides may occur on steep slopes where soils become saturated.

“Flooding is expected in low-lying areas, those in flood plains as well as in urban areas with poor drainage. The public is advised to avoid driving through or wading in fast moving water,” says the Director of Meteorological Services Dr. David Gikungu in a statement.

The Weatherman says heavy rainfall events are likely to occur in the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley, the South-eastern lowlands, the Coast, North-western and North-eastern Kenya.

Dr. Gikungu says that visibility is likely to reduce during heavy rainfall events and is asking road-users, aviators and boat operators to exercise caution, “the expected heavy rainfall is likely to be accompanied by strong winds, thunder and lightning,” says Dr. Gikungu and adds, “The public is advised to avoid sheltering under trees and metallic structures to minimize exposure to lightning strikes.”

The Weatherman is further urging the public to be cautious since the forecasted strong winds may damage roofs, trees, and towering objects such as billboards, “large waves and strong winds may affect marine activities,” he says in the statement.

The Weatherman is also warning that parts of the Coast, North-eastern and North-western Kenya are expected to experience high average daytime temperatures of over 30 degrees Celsius while the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley and the South-eastern lowlands will experience low night time temperatures of between 10 degrees Celsius and 20 degrees Celsius.
