We didn’t bribe Monda, my son was poisoned against the Deputy Governor

NAIROBI, Kenya Mar 14- The key witness for the embattled Kisii Deputy Governor Robert Monda, Joseph Misati has disputed bribery accusations leveled against him.

Misati’s son, Dennis Mokaya, had told Senators Wednesday that his family gave the DG Sh800,000 to secure a job at Gusii Water and Sanitation Company (GWASCO) as a Commercial Manager.

Misati however denied bribing Monda saying the alleged Sh799,000 sent to Monda was a long standing loan that he was repaying through his son’s phone number.

In his evidence before the house, Misati revealed that he and Monda enjoy a friendship that spans more than 30 years and they would occasionally borrow money from each other.

Misati stood with the Deputy Governor saying his son was poisoned by individuals out to settle scores with Monda politically.

“My son was lured, intoxicated with some of the people to use him to fail the DG. I made a request to see the DG at his home. We had some social discussion. The DG told me that he had given me money. He asked whether I was in a position to refund the money,” charged Misati.

Monda’s key witness testified that they had visited Kisii Deputy Governor at his residences where he was accompanied by his four sons.

The Deputy Governor allegedly told Misati that he needed money requesting him to repay him some Sh500,000 he had borrowed in October 2022.

“As we were discussing he told me he needed some money in cash. My wife sent Sh250,000. It was late and there was no shop which had a float therefore I asked my wife to send the money to Dennis Mokaya,” said Misati.

During the cross-examination, Misati was questioned why he failed to send the money through his mobile phone number and instead used his wife’s number and that of his son.

“It was a refund, the money which he gave in October 2022. The money was ours. Myself and the wife. Dennis was not part of the money. It is not true that he gave me any money. I initiated the visit of going to see the DG,” he said.

Yesterday,an emotionally eroded Mokaya narrated how he lost his lifetime savings when his family advised him to issue a bribe of Sh 800,000 to the Kisii Deputy Governor to secure the commercial manager job at Gusii Water Company Sacco.

Tears welled uncontrollably as Mokaya testified against Monda on the bribery allegations that played out before senators on how her wife had a miscarriage following the stress they went through.

Mokaya who was the first witness for the MCAs revealed that he sold his wife’s salon at Sh500,000 in Ruai Town to raise the bribery amount and relocated his family to Kisii expecting he would secure the job.

“We sold the salon to Peter Mungai but my wife was initially not comfortable with the idea because that was our life time saving for 13 years but I persuaded her that the deal was the betterment of our lives,” he said.

It’s alleged that Misati had engaged Mondi as the Deputy Governor who was taunted to be influential in securing the job as he was close to the GWASCO Managing Director Lucy Wahito.

The outcome of the talks was for the family to pay Sh800,000 to secure the vacancy by influencing Wahito to shelve the post for Mokaya.

Mokaya and his wife raised the Sh800,000 which was forwarded to his parents and subsequently forwarded to the Kisii Deputy Governor in three batches last year with Sh500,000 sent on a Mpesa transaction with the rest Sh300,000 delivered in cash.

When the Kisii Deputy Governor failed to secure the commercial manager to Mokaya even after she was shortlisted, he resorted to reporting the matter to Kisii County Assembly and the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission for investigation.

“This is my life time saving but if he will choose friendship over the truth, then so be it,”Mokaya stated as he cried uncontrollably.

“I have nothing against my family but we have lost everything as we have built the business for 13 years but we lost everything and our parents have became unsupportive,” he added.
