Uhuru underscores role of media during elections ahead of South Africa´s polls

The head of the African Union Election Observation Mission (AUEOM) President Uhuru Kenyatta has emphasized on the importance of the role of media during elections and the need for accurate reporting throughout the election period.

The former President spoke when he met with Media Monitoring Africa (MMA), a well-known organization that promotes ethical journalism and ensures balanced and impartial media coverage during elections.

According to a statement, President Kenyatta who is leading the AU Election Observation Mission delegation held several meetings in Johannesburg, as part of the preparations for the upcoming General Elections scheduled for May 29th South Africa.

At the same time, President Kenyatta emphasized the crucial role that faith-based organizations play in promoting peaceful and credible elections when he met with representatives from the South African Council of Churches. 

Kenyatta also met with South Africa’s Minister of Home Affairs, Aaron Motsoaledi.

These strategic meetings by the delegation highlight a comprehensive approach to election observation, involving religious organizations, media watchdogs, and government officials.

The efforts underscore the African Union’s commitment to supporting member states in upholding democratic principles and promoting stability across the continent.
