‘Uhuru receives 2.6 million per month’- Isaac Mwaura

Retired President Uhuru Kenyatta takes home Sh2.6 million monthly according to Government spokesperson Isaac Mwaura.

This he revealed during a statement on Friday,31st May 2024.

He said that out of this amount, Sh1.6 million is monthly pension while the remaining Sh1 million is in the form of allowances.

“President Uhuru Kenyatta has received a lump sum payment of Sh48 million, equivalent to one year’s salary for each of the two terms he served.

“Additionally, he receives a monthly pension of Sh1.6 million and monthly allowances of Ksh1 million including an entertainment allowance of Sh200,000, a monthly house allowance of Sh300,000, a fuel allowance of Sh200,000 per month and a monthly allowance of Sh300,000 for water, electricity and telephone services,” Mwaura said.

He added:

“Most importantly, all these benefits are exempted from tax.”

He added that he and his spouse also benefit from a comprehensive medical and hospital cover worth Sh20 million.

This comes a few days after former State House spokesperson Kanze Dena said Uhuru has been forced to pay bills out of his own pocket, including payment of staff

She said the State House has declined to renew contracts for staff attached to Uhuru, including herself.

She also disputed a list of staff said to be working in Uhuru’s office, saying some had been redeployed to ministries.

“The truth is that we [Uhuru’s office] are not being facilitated,” Dena told the Star.

Mwaura said that the government is fully committed to supporting the retired President’s office and other state officers in accordance with the law.

He insisted that contrary to some reports, the government has consistently honoured its obligations to retired presidents, vice presidents and the former prime minister.

The government spokesperson further said that jointly, Uhuru and former First Lady Mama Ngina own 12 top-of-the-range vehicles, all at the expense of the government.

The Presidential Retirement Benefits Act 2003 provides lucrative retirement benefits for former heads of state including, 36 staff, luxury cars, unlimited health insurance coverage and international travel allowance of up to four trips a year.

They are limited to two weeks each and delegations are limited to 10.
