U.S., U.K. demand transparent probe into death of Albert Ojwang in police custody
The Embassies of the United States and the United Kingdom in Nairobi have weighed into the recent mysterious death of Albert Ojwang while in police custody demanding a swift and transparent investigation.
In separate statements, the two foreign missions expressed deep condolences to Ojwang’s family and stressed the need for accountability and justice amid growing public concern.
“The Embassy of the United States of America extends our condolences to the family and loved ones of Albert Ojwang during this time of mourning,” said the U.S. Embassy, citing “concerns around the circumstances of Ojwang’s death.”
It added, “The Embassy supports calls from the government, parliamentarians, and Kenyan citizens for accountability through a transparent investigation.”
The embassy urged the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) to conduct its ongoing probe swiftly and thoroughly, and it also called on the Kenyan government to provide the authority with the necessary support to fulfil its mandate.
The British High Commission expressed its condolences and echoed a similar call for action.
“We echo calls for a swift, independent, and thorough investigation into his death in custody. The rule of law, accountability, and free speech are vital pillars of any democracy,” the UK in Kenya posted on the X platform.
Ojwang’s death, under suspicious circumstances while in the hands of law enforcement, has sparked outrage across the nation, with rights groups, religious leaders, and lawmakers demanding justice and truth into the incident.
Several officers linked to the incident have already been interdicted, and IPOA has launched formal investigations into the matter.
