Three dead, eight injured in Kinangop police rescue accident

A tragic road accident in the early hours of Sunday morning claimed the lives of three people and left eight others injured after a speeding vehicle crashed into a police-led rescue operation at Chuma area, approximately three kilometers south of Kinangop Police Station.

According to a police report filed under OB No. 02/15/06/2025 at 1:30am, the incident occurred at around 1:20am as officers from Kinangop Police Station and the Traffic Department were responding to an earlier accident involving two motorcycles.

As the officers and members of the public were conducting rescue and recovery efforts, a silver Isuzu D-Max double cabin pickup, registration number KBT 522N, approached the scene at high speed from the Engineer direction toward Njabini and rammed into a stationary police vehicle, registration number GKB 679T, and a parked lorry.

The impact hit several people at the scene, including police officers and civilians assisting in the rescue.

The collision resulted in the deaths of Sergeant Dickson Kilonzo Police Constable Gilbert Makori and Ben Wakivi, the driver of the Isuzu D-Max.

Eight other individuals sustained injuries and were rushed to North Kinangop Mission Hospital for emergency treatment.

They include Edwin Mungai Kamau, an Assistant Inspector General from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations Headquarters, who suffered a fractured left leg; Cpl/Driver Hesbon Mwangi, who sustained head injuries; Cpl Abdi Hassan, who complained of chest pains; and Cpl Boniface Libuthi, who was injured on the right leg.

Also injured were Lucy Nyambura Wanjiku, 20, with a left leg injury; Peter Macharia Karanja, 47, with general body pain; Daniel Kibebo Wainoga, 28, with a left leg injury; and Dominic Waweru, 30, who suffered a fractured left leg.

The bodies of the deceased were moved to Engineer Sub-County Hospital Mortuary for preservation and postmortem examinations.

Confirming the incident, Nyandarua County Commissioner Abdirisack Jaldesa described it as “a dark morning for the county,” adding that a thorough investigation would be conducted.

“This is a heartbreaking event that has cost us the lives of dedicated officers and endangered civilians. We are working closely with investigators to determine the circumstances and ensure accountability,” he said.

Nyandarua County Police Commander Stella Cherono also confirmed the incident and said that the scene was attended by the Sub-County Police Commander, the Sub-County Criminal Investigations Officer, the Traffic Base Commander for North Kinangop, and Scenes of Crime officers who documented the events.

She stated that the Kinangop Traffic Base Commander is leading the ongoing investigation and assured the public of full transparency.
