Stolen AK-47 rifle recovered after tip-off in Kabete

Police in Kabete have recovered an AK-47 rifle that was stolen from Dagoretti Police Post during the anti-government protests on June 25, 2025.

The recovery, confirmed by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), follows a major crackdown launched in the wake of the unrest, which saw several police stations vandalized and firearms looted.

According to the DCI, officers at Kabete Police Station acted on a tip-off regarding a suspicious individual carrying a bulging bag at Gravity Bar in the Gahui area. Officers responded swiftly and pursuedthe suspect, who is believed to have connections to the Dagoretti Police Post attack.

The trail led detectives to the suspect’s residence in the Njuki-Kirigu area. However, the man reportedly managed to flee upon noticing the approaching officers.

The DCI stated that a subsequent search of his premises, conducted in the presence of the suspect’s mother, uncovered “an AK-47 rifle, an empty magazine, and a single round of 7.62mm ammunition.”

Authorities confirmed that these items were among those stolen when Dagoretti Police Post was set ablaze during the night of the demonstrations.

The recovery is part of a broader operation aimed at tracking down individuals involved in the coordinated attacks on law enforcement facilities during the protests. President William Ruto has since issued a directive for all perpetrators associated with the unrest to be arrested and brought to justice.

Acting on this directive, the National Police Service has announced that a manhunt is currently underway, with detectives pursuing new leads to apprehend all individuals linked to the stolen weapons.
