State to establish hubs for reporting cyber threats

The Government is set to create hubs for reporting online fraudulent activities and cyber threats.

Interior Principal Secretary Dr. Raymond Omollo on Thursday said the main core of the hub will focus on protecting users from cyber threats ensuring responsible access to digital content.

Speaking after engaging telecommunication operators and social media organizations, PS Omollo noted there was a growing need to effectively navigate the misuse and abuse of social media to address the irresponsible use of social media disregarding the limits of free speech.

“To mitigate the negative impact of such fraudulent activities, a centralized hub for reporting and sharing information will be established to protect users from cyber threats. Additionally, a national framework for content moderation and filtering will be explored to ensure responsible access to digital content,” said PS Omollo.

He added, “However, as the digital space grows, so do the challenges associated with its misuse. In this regard, the Ministry, through the National Computer and Cybercrime Co-ordination Committee (NC4), has been actively coordinating efforts to enable a secure cyberspace for government and the great people of Kenya.”

The development follows concerns from government officials about the misuse of social media platforms particularly from the youth.

The Interior PS said the Government is committed to fostering a secure, accountable, and inclusive digital space where innovation thrives while ensuring that technology is not exploited for malicious purposes.
