NAIROBI, Kenya, Apr 5 — Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki has placed three alcohol manufacturers and distillers on temporary suspension pending compliance of outstanding regulatory requirements.

Kindiki said Friday that to resume operations, the Kenya Wine Agencies Limited (KWAL) has to first adhere to the verification and approval of the model of the transmitter for offloading and dispatching flow meters.

The Savanna Brands Company Limited will resume its activities after the production of valid calibration certificates for GC machine and services done on them and payment of the standards levy.

Patiala Distillers Kenya Limited, can resume operations after the resolution of the legal dispute between it and the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS)  and adhering to the positive Noise Level Measurement Report from the Directorate of Occupational Safety and Health Services (DOSHS).

Kindiki disclosed that the government had given a greenlight to UDV and Kenya Nut Company to resume their operations after the two met all requirements.

24 distillers remain suspended

The announcement came following the completion of the inspection of 29 active manufacturers and distillers directed by government as part of the intervention measures to combat illicit alcohol and drug abuse announced on March 6.

Kindiki 24 distillers will remain suspended until they satisfactorily address the compliance issues cited within 21 days effective Monday, April 8.

The entities affected include; Keroche Breweries Limited, Two Cousins Distillers Limited, Corobus Africa Products Limited, Lyniber Supplies Limited, Elle Kenya Limited, Zheng Hong (K) Limited, Rift Valley Brewing Company— Thika, Africa Spirit Limited, and Manchester Distillers Limited.

National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA), Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS), Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA), Directorate of Occupational Safety and Health Services (DOSHS), Anti-Counterfeit Agency (ACA), Public Health Department, National Environmental Management Authority (NEMA) and the Department of Weights and Measures led the vetting exercise.

Kindiki lauded all agencies, public officers, and manufacturers and distillers of second-generation alcohol for their cooperation throughout the vetting exercise.
