Six plead not guilty in Albert Ojwang murder case
Six individuals accused over death of Albert Ojwang have pleaded not guilty at Kibera Law Courts on Tuesday.
The six: Central Police Station OCS Samson Taalam, James Mukhwana, Peter Kimani, Brian Mwaniki, Gin Ammitou Abwao and Brian Mwaniki Njue.pleaded not guilty before the Kibera law Courts today denying the murder that has sparked outrage in the country with protests held last week to demand justice for the slain teacher and blogger.
On Monday, the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) preferred murder charges against the six who were arraigned at the Kibera Law Courts, but plea taking was deferred by Justice Diana Kavenza after two of the suspects appeared in court without legal representation.
Ojwang was arrested on June 7th in Homa Bay over alleged defamatory posts targeting Deputy Inspector General of Police Eliud Lagat.
He was briefly held at Mawego Police Station before being transferred to Central Police Station in Nairobi later that night, where he allegedly died in custody.
A post-mortem conducted two days later attributed his death to a combination of head injuries from blunt force trauma, neck compression, and extensive bruising across his body.
Meanwhile, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has said the Government is ready to meet and hold talks with the families of protest victims.
He said the government has opened the door for dialogue and was prepared to extend a supporting hand to the affected families.
“In the Ministry, and from a human perspective, we are ready to meet the families of the victims who unfortunately lost their lives as a result of these political acts. We are open to having a conversation with them and exploring ways we can offer further support,” CS Murkomen said.
