Senegal’s New President Appoints Ousmane Sonko as Prime Minister in Swift Political Move » Capital News
NAIROBI, Kenya Apr 3 – Senegal’s newly elected President, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, wasted no time in making a significant political move on Tuesday by appointing the outspoken and influential politician Ousmane Sonko as prime minister, marking his first official act in office.
Sonko, a prominent critic of former President Macky Sall, enjoys widespread popularity, particularly among the country’s youth. Despite being disqualified from running in the March 24 presidential election due to a defamation conviction, Sonko vehemently denied any wrongdoing.
Running on a joint campaign platform under the slogan “Diomaye is Sonko,” Sonko threw his weight behind Faye, urging his supporters to rally behind the new president. Faye emerged victorious in the election, securing over 54 percent of the vote in the initial round.
Following his inauguration on Tuesday, Faye wasted no time in appointing Sonko as prime minister, a move that was met with anticipation and speculation across the country.
In response to his appointment, Sonko expressed his commitment to supporting President Faye and assured that he would present him with a comprehensive list of proposed ministerial appointments for approval. “There will be no hesitation in providing full support to President Faye as he shoulders this significant responsibility,” Sonko declared.
