Senators propose punitive measures to curb sale of tobacco to underage

Senators have proposed more punitive measures against individuals selling tobacco products to the underage in the country.

During a debate on the Tobacco Control Amendment Bill 2024, Senators also pushed for a complete ban on flavors and additives contained in tobacco products.

The debate which is under second reading at the Senate, attracted high support as Senators said the review could not have come at a better as the existing regulations date back to 2007.

The Bill also seeks to regulate the sale of e-cigarettes wit hefty penalties proposed for offenders who will go contrary to the new laws.

Concerns have emerged as dubious sellers have resulted in luring under age with additives and flavors.

If the bill which will also be considered at the National Assembly sails through, will see tougher and stringent measures imposed on the tobacco industry.
