Senate to begin impeachment probe of Kisii Deputy Governor Monda tomorrow » Capital News
NAIROBI, Kenya Mar 12 – The Senate plenary will on Wednesday commence the process of hearing and deciding on the proposed impeachment of Kisii Deputy Governor Robert Monda.
The hearing comes after the House on Tuesday resolved to alter its meeting schedule for Wednesday and Thursday, which will mark the final day for the Senate to vote on whether to support or oppose Monda’s impeachment.
The approved motion to amend the meeting hours was put forward by the House Majority Leader, Aaron Cheruiyot.
Senators will subsequently convene for both morning and afternoon sessions over the two days.
“Morning sitting will commence at 9.00 am to 1.00 pm and the afternoon sittings will start at 2.30 pm until the conclusion of business listed on the order paper of the day,” Cheruiyot said.
The Deputy Governor was impeached on February 29, 2024, by members of the Kisii County Assembly amid accusations of abuse of office and bribery.
At the beginning of Wednesday’s hearing session, Senators will discuss the accusations brought against the Kisii Deputy Governor before allowing the ward representatives to present their case on the floor of the House.
Subsequently, the Kisii Deputy Governor will be granted the chance to respond and offer a defense before Senators proceed to vote on whether to uphold the impeachment charges or reject them.
The House chose to settle the impeachment investigation in a plenary session after their attempt on March 7, 2024, to establish a special committee for the inquiry fell through due to lack of support.
Monda’s hearing is likely to become politically charged, setting the stage for clashes between lawmakers from the Kenya Kwanza and Azimio coalitions in the House.
Monda is aligned with the Azimio coalition, having been elected on the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party ticket along with Governor Simba Arati.
