NAIROBI, Kenya May 8 – All schools will re-open for the second term on Monday following two postponements over floods that have ravaged the country since last month.
President William Ruto, who made the announcement Wednesday, said he is relying on advise from the Kenya Meteorological Department which has predicted favourable conditions from next week.
“The president has made the announcement for the schools to re-open on Monday next week,” an official at State House said.
The president made the announcement when during a meeting with Kajiado and Laikipa leaders.
Kenya has been worst hit by floods due to heavy rains linked to El Nino in what has led to deaths of 238 people and displacement of more than 200,000 others.
The president said the government will avail funds for damaged schools infrastructure through NG-CDF.
The excessive rainfall, linked to the El Niño weather phenomenon, has led to overflowing rivers and sewers, submerging roads and homes in most parts of the country.
