President William Ruto has led the nation in mourning former Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Chairperson Wafula Chebukati who passed away on Thursday while undergoing treatment at Nairobi Hospital.

In a condolence message, the head of state described Chebukati as a principled and diligent leader who served the nation with integrity.

“Chebukati was a principled and diligent leader who served the nation with integrity. His death is a great loss to our country. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends during this difficult time,” the President stated.

National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula also paid tribute to Chebukati hailing him as a steadfast defender of the rule of law.

“During his tenure as Chairman of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission, he carried out his responsibilities with remarkable courage, fidelity to the Constitution, and an unwavering commitment to justice. Even in the face of immense challenges, he remained resolute, guided by his oath of office and the principles of fairness and transparency,” Wetang’ula said.

He described Chebukati as an advocate of great repute whose legacy will continue to inspire legal minds and public servants.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen lauded Chebukati’s leadership, stating that he will be remembered for his principled leadership, courage and fidelity to the Constitution.

“A true patriot and a man of immense integrity, Chebukati professionally steered the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) through two elections,” Murkomen said.

Chebukati led the IEBC through two election cycles, including the historic 2017 repeat presidential election that followed the Supreme Court’s annulment of the initial results.
