NAIROBI Kenya, Apr 23- Several people have been trapped in a five-storey building that has collapsed in Gesima, Nyamira County.
Red Cross reported on Tuesday reports search and rescue efforts are underway.
“Several people are feared trapped in a five-storey building collapse reported at Gesima in Nyamira County. Search and rescue efforts are underway,” Red Cross reports.
Red Cross also reports that since the onset of March-May rains a total of 11,206 households have been displaced by floods in several parts of the country.
The Organization reveals that a total of 24,741 households have been impacted leading to over 188 people rescued during the rainy period.
“Since the onset of the rains multiple counties (23) have felt its effects, resulting in households being affected, displacements, the establishment of displacement camps, submerged arable land, impacted businesses and livestock deaths,” read the statement.
The Organization also stated that the intense rains that caused flooding had impacted 24 schools and submerged 27, 716 acres of land.
Additionally, a total of 4,824 livestock deaths have been reported since the onset of the rains.
“The Kenya Red Cross Society has proactively prepared for these challenges by ensuring prompt emergency responses, conducting search and rescue missions, prepositioning shelter kits and distributing essential supplies,” read the statement.
Also, 49 IDP Camps have been established in various counties to hold those people displaced by the floods.
Redcross adds that a total of 364 households have been supported with food, while 1,425 people have been reached with Health outreaches.
A total of 20,291 non-food items have been distributed to the affected individuals.
The Organization has, however, warned the public of high rainfall intensity expected to continue in several parts of the country.
Counties to receive heavy rainfall include; Kakamega, Vihiga, Busia, Bungoma, Kisumu, Kisii Nyamira, Migori, and Siaya among others.
Red Cross warns of raising water levels from the seven hydro stations urging those in the high-risk areas to adhere to advisories shared and if need be relocate for safety measures.
