Renowned Kenyan preacher Gilbert Deya killed in road crash

Renowned televangelist Bishop Gilbert Deya has died following a tragic road accident at Namba Kapiyo along the Kisumu–Bondo highway.

According to Nyanza Regional Traffic Enforcement Officer Peter Maina, the accident involved three vehicles: a Toyota Noah driven by Deya, a Moi University bus, and a Siaya County government vehicle.

Preliminary police reports indicate that Deya lost control of his vehicle, veering into the path of the university bus. In an attempt to avoid a head-on collision, the bus swerved and overturned, after which Deya’s vehicle collided with the county government vehicle.

“Deya died on the spot. Two passengers in his vehicle — his wife and another woman — sustained minor injuries. The televangelist’s body was taken to Kombewa Sub-County Hospital mortuary,” confirmed Maina when he spoke to KBC journalist Wycliffe Oketch in Kisumu this evening.

The Traffic Officer also confirmed that the university bus was carrying students, 13 of whom sustained serious injuries. Three were referred to Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital in Kisumu for specialized treatment, while 13 others were treated for minor injuries at Kombewa Sub-County Hospital.

Police investigations into the accident are ongoing.

Bishop Deya rose to national and international fame in the early 2000s through the controversial “miracle babies” saga, which led to his arrest and extradition from the UK on charges related to child trafficking. Despite the scandal, he continued with his televangelism and religious outreach activities until his death today.
