Raila was a fantastic candidate for AUC job
President William Ruto has commended former Prime Minister Raila Odinga for his efforts in seeking the African Union Commission (AUC) Chairmanship.
Speaking on Monday at State House, Mombasa, Ruto noted that Raila’s bid was not just about an individual but a reflection of Kenya’s standing on the continental stage.
“When Prime Minister Raila Odinga announced his candidacy for the AUC Chair position, as President, I took the position that this was not just about Raila Odinga the person, it was equally about Kenya as a country,” said Ruto.
“We processed his candidature through the Cabinet and resolved to deploy government support, as has been done before,” he added.
Despite losing the seat to Djibouti’s Mahamoud Youssouf, Ruto described Raila as a formidable candidate who represented Kenya with distinction.
“He was available for all the appointments scheduled for him. His candidature united Kenyans across the political divide.”
The President also extended his gratitude to African leaders who backed Kenya’s bid stating that their decision to prevent a leadership stalemate at the AUC demonstrated solidarity.
“I wish to thank my colleagues across the African continent for their show of solidarity and the support they extended to Kenya. When it became necessary to make a decision to avoid a stalemate and ensure the AUC had a Chair, they made the patriotic choice to support the eventual winner,” he stated.
Ruto reiterated Kenya’s commitment to the African Union’s Agenda 2063 and pledged to continue strengthening intra-African trade and development initiatives.
