Protest chaos not my handiwork – Ichung’wah fires back at Gachagua
National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah has dismissed allegations made by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, who accused him and other leaders of orchestrating the recent unrest in various parts of the country.
While responding to what he described as “absurd and shameless” claims by former DP, Ichung’wah maintained that the chaos witnessed during the protests on June 25 — which included destruction of property, attacks on homes, and the burning of Kikuyu Law Courts — was instigated by Gachagua’s political allies.
“The only person responsible for Gachagua’s political downfall is Gachagua himself,” Ichung’wah asserted. “His allies are not victims; they are perpetrators, charged in courts of law with clear, damning evidence.”
Ichung’wah stressed that he has no involvement in any unlawful acts, including storming police stations, as alleged by Gachagua. He challenged the former Deputy President to present evidence linking him to the unrest.
“If he has an ounce of evidence to prove otherwise, let him take it to the ICC, the UN, or whatever platform he prefers,” he said.“But don’t mistake accountability for persecution.”
The Majority Leader pointed to the arrest of Manyatta MP Gitonga Mukunji, an ally of Gachagua, as clear proof of the latter’s role in sponsoring chaos. Ichung’wah stated that the legislator was caught on camera inciting looting during the protests.
He asserted that the arrest of Gachagua’s associates is not coincidental, accusing the former Deputy President of fostering a “culture of deception, incitement, and divisive politics” to shift the blame onto others.
“If he has even an iota of evidence to back his wild allegations, he is free, just like every other Kenyan, to submit it to investigative agencies,” Ichung’wah added. “We will not allow him to weaponize lies to cleanse himself while dragging others into his abyss,”
“Gachagua’s allies, whom he has sponsored and shielded, are not victims. They are perpetrators, charged in courts of law with clear, damning evidence,” the Majority Leader stated.
Ichung’wah also dismissed Gachagua’s previous sensational claims — including an alleged poisoning of an MP — as fabricated drama intended to evoke public sympathy.
“We will not allow criminals to pose as martyrs or anarchists to destabilize the nation for selfish political gain,” he asserted.
