President Ruto to launch Raila’s AUC Chairmanship bid today

President William Ruto is today set to officially unveil former Prime Minister Raila Odinga as the country’s candidate for the chairmanship of the African Union Commission (AUC).

The event will take place at the statehouse in Nairobi.

At least five heads of state particularly from the East African Community (AUC) are expected to grace the event.

The former Prime Minister is facing off with Djibouti’s Mohamoud Youssouf, Anil Gayan (Mauritius) and Richard Randriamandrato (Madagascar) for the continental seat.

The AUC chairperson’s seat is set to fall vacant in February 2025 when its current occupant, Moussa Faki Mahamat of Chad, finishes his second term.

The AUC elections will be held in February next year during the African Union Summit.
