President Ruto backs police, urges national support for law and order

President William Ruto has reaffirmed the government’s unwavering support for the National Police Service as they uphold law and order across the country.

Speaking during a breakfast event at State House, Nairobi, to honour 2025 FKF Premier League champions—Kenya Police FC and Kenya Police Bullets—the President emphasized that police officers play a critical role in securing the nation, safeguarding lives, and protecting property.

“Our security men and women deserve every support that we can muster for them to secure our nation,” he stated. “To every police officer, I give you my assurance that the Government of Kenya will support you and stand by you as you keep our families and property safe.”

President Ruto warned that no individual, regardless of status, is above the law and said the government will not tolerate attempts to intimidate or undermine police officers through violence. He called on citizens to respect and cooperate with the police for the good of the country.

He underscored the government’s efforts to improve the welfare of law enforcement officers, including allocating 20 per cent of affordable housing units to police personnel. “We must look after our policemen and women as they look after our country,” he said.

On sports, the President congratulated Kenya Police FC and Kenya Police Bullets for their historic victories and reiterated the government’s commitment to improving sports infrastructure and nurturing talent. He revealed that the largest football stadium in Kenya and the region will be completed by December, alongside the development of 37 sports academies nationwide.

Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya and Interior CS Kipchumba Murkomen echoed the President’s message, with Mr Murkomen noting that rogue elements were misusing protests for chaos. He called on police to act decisively to uphold law and order. “The National Police Service must be ruthless in dealing with criminals who want to destabilize our country,” he said.

Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja assured the nation of the police service’s commitment to keeping the country safe, despite facing numerous challenges. He thanked the President for his continued support and pledged to lead officers in executing their duties professionally.

The government also announced plans to launch the President’s Cup, a grassroots tournament aimed at expanding talent development pathways across the country.
