KISUMU, Kenya, Mar 14 – A police officer was Wednesday evening killed by rowdy youths and his firearm stolen in the ongoing crackdown on illicit brews and other substances in Rarieda, Siaya county.
According to a police report, the deceased was in the company of another officer when they raided a homestead to confiscate the brews.
“The officers were acting on a tip off,” the report said.
The officers recovered brews, 21 satchets of Simba waragi and 4 packets of super match cigarettes for export.
The suspect, Caren Okumu then raised an alarm attracting villagers who responded.
They attacked the two officers with stones and other crude weapons.
The slain officer, shot five times in the air to scare away the attackers but it was in vain.
“The officer succumbed to injuries as the other officer fled to safety but with injuries on his shoulder,” said the report.
The attackers took off with his pistol loaded with unknown rounds of ammunition.
The body was transferred to Lwak mission hospital mortuary awaiting postmortem.
Police have managed to arrest Caren Auma as the hunt for more suspects intensified and also to recover the missing firearm.
The attack happened after a warning issued early this week by Nyanza Regional Commissioner Flora Mworoa that security agencies will not spare whoever is hampering the crackdown.
