One dead after bus ferrying Chavakali Boys students overturns
One student from Chavakali Boys High School has died and several others were injured after a bus accident at Maboleo, Kisumu County.
The students were heading home aboard an Easy Coach bus when it overturned at the Mamboleo junction on Monday, 9.00 pm.
Two students sustained severe injuries and are currently admitted at Avenue Hospital, Kisumu while 32 others are undergoing treatment at the Jaramogi Oginga Teaching and Referral Hospital in Kisumu.
Giving an update following the accident, Easy Coach Limited extended its heartfelt condolences to the family and loved ones of the late students.
“We are deeply saddened to confirm a fatal accident involving our Mbale-Nairobi bus,” read the statement.
Also, the bus company wished a steady recovery to the injured students who were admitted to the hospital.
The bus was ferrying the students to Nairobi following the closure of schools for the first term.
According to a report from Kondele Police Station, the bus driver was not found at the scene.
“It happened that the vehicle was negotiating the said Coptic roundabout on its way to Kisumu from Kakamega when the driver lost control hit a rail guard and the vehicle fell at the edge of the road and rested on its left side,” the police report details on the accident.
According to statistics from the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) collected between January 1 – March 24, 2024, pedestrians accounted for 403 deaths out of the 1,090 recorded during the period under review.
This is an increase compared to the same period last year where 343 deaths were reported.
The data, however, showed a slight decrease in deaths involving motorcyclists which stood at 260 compared to 276 recorded same period in 2023.
