Nyandarua MCA Beth Wahito dies in a road accident

Nyandarua County is mourning the sudden death of Beth Wahito, a specially elected Member of the County Assembly (MCA), following a fatal road accident along the busy Nairobi–Nakuru highway.

Wahito, who represented Njabini Kiburu Ward, was widely respected for her fearless leadership, dedication to public service, and tireless advocacy for women and marginalised communities.

With a political career spanning over 30 years, she was among the pioneer women leaders in Nyandarua. She began her journey as a councillor in the now‑defunct Nyandarua County Council and later served as a specially elected MCA in both the first and the current (third) Nyandarua County Assembly.

Throughout her years in leadership, she built a reputation for being bold, outspoken, and deeply committed to her constituents. She held key roles in various political parties, serving as Youth Leader for the Democratic Party (DP) early in her career, then Chairperson of NARC–Kenya in Nyandarua. More recently, she was the Kinangop Constituency Coordinator for the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), demonstrating her continuous influence and engagement across the political spectrum.

In the County Assembly, she played a vital role in shaping public policy. She was the Vice-Chairperson of the Health Services Committee and also served in the Public Works, Roads, Transport, Housing and Energy Committee, the Members’ Welfare, Catering and Library Committee, and the Special Funds Accounts Committee.

Beyond politics, Wahito was revered as a nurturing mother, grandmother, and guardian. Her colleagues described her as a warm and bold spirit, always willing to speak up for the vulnerable and push for change in governance and social justice.

Kanjiuri Ridge MCA Thuo Gachino, visibly shaken, paid an emotional tribute to the fallen leader. “Hon. Wahito was a distinguished leader who, through her experience in the political arena, guided us. I do not know how we will be operating in the Assembly without her—she was motherly to us all,” he said.

Gachino also recounted the heartbreak of learning about her passing: “We had spent the day together in Naivasha only to learn of her death when I arrived home in Nakuru. It is very devastating. I also remember like 10 hours ago she updated on her Facebook timeline ‘ndathii mutitu’ meaning ‘I am going to the forest.’ I commented ‘geithania mutitu’—little did I know she was going to a thick forest in the name of death, and she was not to come back.”

Nyandarua County Assembly Speaker Wachira Waiganjo, in a statement, expressed deep sorrow over her passing.

“We honour Hon. Wahito’s life of service and her unmatched courage. May her soul rest in eternal peace. On behalf of the Nyandarua County Assembly family, I extend our heartfelt condolences to her family, friends, and the people of Njabini Kiburu and Kinangop.”

As tributes continue to pour in from across the county and beyond, the people of Nyandarua mourn not just a leader, but a fighter, a mentor, and a trailblazer who paved the way for many women in public service.
