MPs notified on President Ruto´s memo
The Speaker of the National Assembly has issued a Notification to the Members of Parliament and the general public in relation to President’s Memorandum in respect of the Finance Bill, 2024.
In the Notification, the National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula has referred the Memorandum to the Departmental Committee on Finance and National Planning.
With this notification the National Assembly does have to be recalled to consider President Ruto´s decision to withdraw Finance Bill 2024.
Wetangula says the Committee is expected to expeditiously commence consideration of the Presidential Memorandum, its reservations and recommendations, and report to the House at the next regular sitting upon its resumption.
He has directed the Clerk to circulate the notification to all members of National Assembly and facilitate the committee to undertake the exercise and prepare the necessary message for formal conveyance to the House upon its resumption.
“The Committee is required to expeditiously commence consideration of the President’s Memorandum its reservations and recommendations and report to the House at the next regular sitting upon its resumption.“ Stated Speaker Wetangula.
Further, the Clerk was directed to prepare the necessary Message for formal conveyance to the House upon its resumption.
This comes after President William Ruto on Wednesday announced the withdrawal of the contentious Finance Bill 2024, a day after violent protests that saw Parliament invaded by those who took part in demonstrations.
In doing so, the Head of State said he was acting in the best interests of the ordinary citizens.
The President later submitted a Memorandum of Referral to the National Assembly for reconsideration with reservations recommending deletion of all clauses of the bill.
