NAIROBI, Kenya, Apr 26 – The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued an advisory for heavy rain to be expected over the next two days

In the advisory released on Thursday, Director of Metrological Services David Gikungu warned of heavy rainfall of over 40mm to be expected in several parts of the country.

“Heavy rainfall is to be expected in Lake Victoria Basin, Rift Valley, Highlands, West and East of the Rift Valley including Nairobi area, Southeast Lowlands and off coast,“ he stated

The weatherman forecasted that the rain would be heavy on Friday and Saturday and gradually decline afterwards.

“The rainfall is set to intensify to more than 50mm on 26th to 27th April and is likely to reduce in intensity on 28th,” he said

The advisory also mentioned other areas of concern including Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu,Wajir, Garissa and Isiolo

The public is advised to look out for potential floods, flash floods and poor visibility on the roads

“People living downstream rivers and along seasonal rivers should be careful since the water may appear suddenly even though it may not be raining in the area,” he stated

In addition, people in landslide prone areas especially Aberdare ranges, Mt Kenya, Western and other hilly areas have been asked to be vigilant

Kenyans have been urged to avoid driving through or walking in moving water or open fields, sheltering under trees and near trees to minimize exposure to lightning
