Man who attacked police officer sentenced to 7 years

A 24-year-old man, Tyson Kasesi, has been sentenced to seven years in prison after being found guilty of assaulting a police officer while on duty.

It is reported that Kasesi assaulted the officer by hitting and abusing him in May this year in Kakamega County.

Tyson Kasesi was reported to have committed the offense, which is contrary to section 103(a) of the National Police Service Act.

“The main suspect, Tyson Kasesi, is reported to have assaulted a police officer in May 2024. The officer was injured while on duty, resulting in the need for medical attention as indicated in the P3 form presented in court,” stated the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP).

Earlier, Kasesi had refused to respond to the charges on two separate occasions before pleading guilty to all four charges against him before Kakamega Chief Magistrate J.J. Masiga.

The prosecution team, led by Moraa Atandi, urged the court to impose a short-term sentence on the suspect in accordance with the law and regulations.

In delivering the sentence, the magistrate noted that the offense of assaulting police officers is becoming increasingly prevalent in the country, thus a prison sentence is the most appropriate measure to deter society and anyone intending to commit such an offense,” said the ODPP.

This sentence comes two days after a 19-year-old youth was arrested for assaulting and injuring a traffic police officer in Mirema.

The suspect, Ian Njoroge, was arrested at his parents’ home in Jacaranda, Kayole, Nairobi, on Sunday evening as part of an operation led by detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in Nairobi.

Njoroge was charged with robbery with violence, assault causing grievous bodily harm, and resisting arrest on Tuesday.

Appearing before Magistrate BenMark at the Milimani court, Duncan Okatch and Vincent Lempaa informed the court that Njoroge was abused at his home during the arrest.

A short video showing Njoroge being interrogated was also played in court, which the prosecution claimed was clear evidence of his mistreatment since the officers insulted him. Njoroge denied the charges against him.

Later, the court granted the prosecution one day to detain Njoroge at Industrial Area Prison.
