NAIROBI, Kenya, Apr 3 — Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki now says Kenya will leverage digital technology, data, and Artificial Intelligence to bolster border security.
Speaking Tuesday during the opening of the inaugural National Border Management Conference in Nairobi, CS Kindiki said that technology and infrastructure play pivotal roles in modernizing border management and strengthening the country’s security capabilities.
He underscored the importance of investing in border infrastructure to enhance situational awareness and streamline border control processes.
“The deployment of technology enables us to identify emerging threats and deploy resources more effectively,” he told participants during the conference themed “Building on Coordination and Moving Towards Integration.”
Kindiki reiterated that improving border management not only facilitates legitimate trade and travel but is also crucial for economic growth, regional integration, and fostering closer ties with neighboring countries.
He emphasized the significance of secure and efficient borders in reducing trade barriers and enhancing market access for businesses.
Further, Kindiki stressed the need to prioritize investments in border infrastructure and streamline customs procedures to facilitate smoother cross-border movements.
He affirmed Kenya’s commitment to strengthening cooperation with regional partners to promote trade facilitation and economic development.
The Interior CS called on Kenyans to collaborate with the security apparatus in the country.
“Our collective security is not solely the responsibility of law enforcement agencies but requires the active participation of every citizen. I urge every one of you to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the relevant authorities,” he said.
The conference brings together delegates from Tanzania, Somalia, South Sudan, Ethiopia and Uganda.
Also present at the event were Principal Secretaries Raymond Omollo (Internal Security and National Administration), Julius Bitok (Immigration and Citizen Services), Abdi Dubat (East African Community), and development partners.
