KICD apologizes for blaming indecent dressing for rape in Form 3 study book
The Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development KICD has addressed concerns expressed about a Form 3 textbook, supposedly blaming rape on indecent dressing.
The book is Certificate for Biology Form 3. The book, under the sub-topic “Prevention of AIDS,” includes the following text: “Modest dress code and behaviour to avoid provoking or tempting other persons into sexual arousal. Many rape cases are due to such provocations. One should also avoid being alone with a person of the opposite sex in secluded areas to prevent losing one’s control. Date rapes are even more common than rape by total strangers. Girls should be especially watchful in not having their drinks mixed with drugs or alcohol, which cause them to lose control of their senses.”
A petition on the matter is ongoing according to a viral thread on X.com, where questions are being raised.
Sections supposedly insinuate that rape can be caused by indecent dressing ‘ or that ‘modesty and dress codes are effective in preventing rape’.
KICD reacted to the concerns “the emails have expressed concern that two sentences in the book ‘insinuate that rape can be caused by indecent dressing or that modesty and dress codes are effective in preventing rape’.
KICD reiterated that ‘this narrative is not only misleading but also dangerous as it perpetuates victim blaming and reinforces rape culture’.
The individuals demanded for an apology from KICD plus a review of content.
“The said book was published by East African Educational Publishers in 2004 and evaluated/approved by KICD (KIE) then and listed in the Orange book in 2005. A new edition of the book was printed and distributed to schools in 2018.” said KICD in a statement on their x.com page.
It further clarified that it ensures books are properly edited and proofread, citing criteria used including a panel of experts, calling it a rigorous exercise.
“Whether a book is approved or not, the publishers are expected to make corrections based on the report of the evaluators and verifiers”
Kenyans however want the book withdrawn., insisting it is misleading.
