NAIROBI, Kenya, Apr 12 — The Teachers Service Commission(TSC) is set to hire an additional 20,000 teachers to bridge the staffing gap in Junior Secondary Schools following talks with the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET).
KUPPET Chairperson Omboko Milema told a press conference in Naivasha that TSC committed to employing more teachers during a six-day retreat he described as successful.
“What the commission needs to ask, they promised they have already asked the Parliament,” he said.
Milema said the recruitment would cost the TSC Sh4 billion.
KUPPET also welcomed a commitment to promote 36,000 teachers at the cost of Sh7.8 billion.
Milema noted that TSC will add select drama teachers the President had ordered promoted.
President William Ruto made the directive during the 2023 Kenya National Music Festival State Concert citing the need to incentivize drama teaching.
“Teachers who have done phenomenal jobs by training these young people, writing scripts, and doing exemplary work should join those to be promoted in this cycle,” President Ruto stated.
TSC also committed to resolving concerns over erroneous promotions after it merged some retired and deceased teachers had earned promotions.
“We addressed concerns that there are some teachers who were alleged to be promoted yet they had died or exited the union, these issues have been properly addressed in this retreat,” KUPPET’s Akelo Misori stated.
KUPPET expressed confidence in the promotion process terming it impartial, inclusive and fair.
“The promotional positions among the 36,000 teachers was done above board because every county got an equal share of available positions. We are satisfied with what was carried out,” Misori stated.
