Joho outlines ambitious mining reforms to spur economic growth
Cabinet Secretary for Mining, Blue Economy and Maritime Affairs, Hassan Joho, has announced that the Ministry is implementing key measures to ensure the mining sector significantly contributes to the economic transformation of regions with minerals and the nation as a whole.
He made the remarks while hosting members of the West Pokot Youth Association for a dialogue on unlocking the county’s mineral potential.
CS Joho highlighted that the Ministry is enacting bold, inclusive reforms aimed at ensuring fairness, profitability, and sustainability in the sector, particularly for artisanal and small-scale miners.
“Some of these initiatives include organizing artisanal miners into cooperatives to maximize their benefits and establishing aggregation centers to ensure these miners receive fair value for their minerals, protecting them from unscrupulous dealers,” he stated.
He also expressed the Ministry’s commitment to attracting credible large-scale investors who will create employment, pay royalties, and invest in supportive infrastructure such as roads and processing plants.
CS Joho encouraged the youth to take an active role in educating their communities about the potential of the mining sector to drive development, reduce poverty, and build long-term economic resilience.
Present at the meeting was Principal Secretary for Mining, Kimtai Harry.
