Its back to school for learners after extended break

Schools reopened Monday for the second term after a two-week postponement following heavy rainfall that occasioned flooding in the country.

However, select schools adversely affected by heavy rains and flooding will reopen later after repairs are done before learners resume learning.

In a statement, the Ministry of Interior and National Administration said adequate security measures have been put in place to ensure the safe and efficient movement of learners, parents, and teachers.

“Security measures have been put in place in all bus termini and other strategic locations where the National Police Service has been deployed adequately to ensure enhanced movement of vehicles and persons travelling, more so school children,” the Ministry said.

Traffic police officers have also been deployed along critical highways to monitor traffic violations such as speeding, overloading, and use of unroadworthy vehicles.

Additionally, no vehicles will be allowed on bridges that have been considered unsafe for use and on roads that have been marked as risky.

The Ministry has also called on parents to ensure the safety of the children to and from school between 6 AM and 6 PM, in close collaboration with the Multi-Agency teams and the leadership of the schools.

The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) is also urging drivers to exercise caution on roads even as it announced an intensified crackdown on the roads.

The validity of licences issued to drivers, school transport vehicles and PSVs, can be verified using the NTSA Mobile Application available on Google Play Store.

“We appeal to parents and guardians to select safe and compliant vehicles to ferry children back to school”, NTSA urged.
