Isiolo Governor Abdi Guyo survives impeachment
Isiolo Governor Abdi Guyo has survived an impeachment attempt after the Senate ruled that the Isiolo County Assembly did not properly convene to debate and vote on the motion seeking his removal from office.
In a statement by Senate on X handle, 31 senators voted to uphold preliminary objections raised by the Governor’s legal team that cited procedural flaws in the County Assembly sittings held on 18th and 26th June 2025.
11 senators supporting the impeachment falling short of the constitutional threshold.
“The Senate finds that the County Assembly of Isiolo did not appropriately hold sittings on the 18th June 2025, and 26th of June 2025, to table, debate, and pass a vote on the motion for the proposed removal from office by impeachment of the Governor of Isiolo County, Abdi Hassan. The impeachment proceedings terminate forthwith.” The statement read.
The senators had reconvened Tuesday from recess to consider the impeachment motion against Governor Guyo who was represented by a legal team that comprised of eight lawyers, led by Elisha Ongoya, and three legal assistants, and has lined up five witnesses, while the county assembly was represented by 10 lawyers, two legal assistants, and four witnesses.
The Senate opted for a full plenary trial after rejecting a motion to establish an 11-member special committee to investigate the allegations against Governor Guyo.
Governor Guyo was impeached by the Isiolo County Assembly last week on allegations of abuse of office, violation of the Constitution, and gross misconduct.
Sixteen out of 18 Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) who voted to impeach him on June 26, 2025, accused him of irregularly appointing 36 advisors and 31 chief officers, awarding flawed contracts, and stalling development projects in the county.
