IPOA probes police shooting in Majengo that left two dead

The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has launched investigations into a deadly police shooting in Nairobi’s Majengo area that left two people dead and three others seriously injured.

The incident, which occurred on the night of March 4, 2025, near Majengo Social Hall involved officers from Shauri Moyo Police Station attempting to arrest a young suspect.

In a statement, IPOA said the arrest attempt reportedly drew the attention of other youths escalating into chaos that saw a young man, estimated to be between 17 and 20 years old, shot and critically wounded.

He later succumbed to his injuries at Kenyatta National Hospital.

“His subsequent death while undergoing treatment at Kenyatta National and Referral Hospital triggered demonstrations in the area on 5th March 2025, leading to further injuries suffered by members of the public and police officers. Further, there was extensive destruction of property including Government buildings and motor vehicles,” said IPOA Chairperson Isaack Hassan.

The oversight body has already recorded key statements, attended one postmortem examination and scheduled another for March 6.

“The Authority sends condolences to the families and friends of the deceased and wishes a quick recovery to all who suffered injuries. IPOA further calls upon citizens not to take the law in their own hands and to refrain from any acts of lawlessness,” Hassan urged.

Separately, the Authority on Wednesday dispatched a team to monitor police conduct during the management of public order during the demonstrations that have been ongoing at Kakuma refugee camp.

Hassan reiterated IPOA’s commitment to holding officers accountable for any misconduct during law enforcement operations.
