Human Rights activists in Kisumu to join Gen Z protests » Capital News

KISUMU, Kenya, Jun 23 – Human rights activists in Kisumu are gearing up for a peaceful demonstration on Wednesday in solidarity with Gen Zs.

Will Otiende, a community organizer called on residents of Kisumu to join them on the streets to advocate for a peaceful country.

“This system has killed us, it is time to come out and voice our concerns in the streets,” he said.

Otiende stated that the government must come out and account for the missing youths since last year in June, when many were killed during the Finance Bill protest.

“They must also take responsibility, a number of survivors are still asking many questions,” he added.

Already, the group has notified the police of their intention to peacefully march along the streets in the lakeside city.

Jimmy Magero, one of the organizers indicated that nobody should remain at home or work station but to come out and join the movement.

“If you fail to show up, they will come for you at home, the way they picked the late Ojwang,” he said.

Magero stated that the demonstration is protected in the Constitution and nobody should be cowed.

However, the team has warned those with ulterior motives to keep off.

“If you’re going to loot or cause destruction to property, please just keep off,” they said.

Dick Orongo, an activist, said the demonstrations will not be against an individual but rather a system, he described as rogue.

Orongo stated that the current system is favoring the elite while ignoring the rights of common citizens.

“On the 25th, we will be out against the oppressive regime,” he said.

He noted that the broad-based government is not favoring the people of Nyanza region but a clique of leaders.

The team has drawn up a route map that will guide their demonstrations.

“We will converge at Kondele, march along Jomo Kenyatta highway and present our petitions to the police, IPOA and DCI,”‘ they said.

They want protection from the police, to clear traffic along the routes and shield them from perpetrators who will be out to cause mayhem.
