Gov’t announces university fees cut to ease burden on families

The Government has announced a reduction in university fees for all academic programmes in public universities, in a move aimed at easing the financial burden on students and their families.

According to the Principal Secretary for Higher Education, Dr. Beatrice Inyangala, the revised fees are the result of extensive consultations with students, the public, and stakeholders in higher education.

She explained that the changes are based on the Student-Centred Funding Model, which ensures that tuition costs are shared through a combination of government scholarships, student loans, and modest family contributions based on need.

“This bold step reaffirms our commitment to ensuring affordable, accessible, and quality university education, while maintaining the financial sustainability of our institutions,” said Dr. Inyangala.

Public universities have been directed to implement the new fee structure effective September 1, 2025, for both first-year and continuing students. Institutions are also required to update their admission and finance portals immediately to reflect the revised rates.

Dr. Inyangala reiterated that the latest reform is part of the government’s broader plan to transform higher education into a pillar of national development.
