
Former lawmaker, women’s rights icon Phoebe Asiyo passes away in the US
Former lawmaker and champion of women’s rights, Dr. Phoebe Asiyo, has passed away in North Carolina, United States.
The news of the death of the trailblazing leader was announced by her family.
Dr. Asiyo was the first black President of Maendeleo ya Wanawake and formerly served as the Member of Parliament for Karachuonyo. She leaves behind a remarkable legacy of advocacy for gender equality, justice, and inclusive development.
“With heavy hearts, we share the profound loss of our cherished mother, Dr. Phoebe Muga Asiyo. Her presence and love will be deeply missed by all who knew her. We kindly ask for your understanding and patience as we navigate this difficult time.” he Asiyo family shared in a statement.
The family stated that funeral and memorial service arrangements will be communicated in due course.
Dr. Asiyo was widely respected across Kenya and beyond for her courageous voice, dedication to community service, and mentorship of generations of women in leadership.
