Floods cause Kenya Railways to suspend all commuter train services
Kenya Railways has announced the temporary suspension of all commuter train services due to heavy rains in the city, prioritizing customer safety.
In a notice, the company emphasized, “We are compelled to take this precautionary measure because the safety of our customers is always of paramount importance to us.”
They assured the public that they would communicate once normal services resume.
This announcement coincides with the Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) partially closing several roads in Nairobi due to heavy rainfall. Roads affected include Aerodrome Road, Kapenguria Road, UN Avenue – Runda, and Kasarani Mwiki Road at Mwiki Bridge.
KURA also warned motorists of flooding along Mombasa Road at Cabanas and Thika Road at Githurai/Kahawa bridge. Traffic police and technical teams are on-site to direct traffic and ensure safety.
The Kenya Meteorological Department issued an alert forecasting continued heavy rainfall over the next seven days, with flooding expected in low-lying and urban areas with poor drainage.
Landslides may occur on steep slopes. Director David Gikungu urged caution for road users, aviators, and boat operators due to reduced visibility, strong winds, thunder, lightning, and potential structural damage.
Gikungu advised against seeking shelter under trees or metallic structures during thunderstorms and warned of possible damage to roofs, trees, and billboards. Marine activities may also be affected by large waves and strong winds.
