Five Dead, 18 Injured in Tragic Road Collision in Bomet » Capital News
NAIROBI,Kenya,Mar 18 – Five people died and 18 others sustained injuries following a collision between a public service vehicle and a tractor in Bomet.
Police said the accident occurred along the Olonguruone-Silibwet road in Bomet’s Mugango area.
According to police, the matatu was travelling from Olenguruone towards Bomet when it swerved out of its lane, crashing into the tractor.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the accident occurred due to the matatu driver’s failure to maintain their lane, resulting in the tragic collision.
“It happened that the driver was driving his motor vehicle from Olenguruone heading towards Bomet general direction and on reaching at the location of the accident, the driver of the matatu failed to keep to his proper lane and rammed into the tractor,” a police report seen by Capital News states in part.
Victimes were rushed to Tenwek Mission Hospital for urgent medical treatment.
Both vehicles involved in the accident were towed to Bomet Police Station for further investigation.
The accident follows a recent accident in Baringo County, where a school bus overturned in the Patkawanin area on the Kabarnet-Marigat highway, claiming the lives of one student and a teacher.
The bus, carrying 63 passengers, including 61 students, one teacher, and the driver, was involved in the Saturday incident.
Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, speaking during his visit to Kapsabet High School in Nandi County to offer condolences to the affected students and teachers, emphasized the importance of road safety, especially for school buses.
He urged all drivers and road users to exercise caution and vigilance to prevent further tragedies, emphasizing the value of young lives and their role in shaping the future of the nation.
“I appeal to all our drivers and other road users to exercise care and vigilance, more so, those driving school buses. The students are precious jewels for our country. Our young people are the future of this country. We ask for a lot of care from our motorists to observe traffic rules so we don’t lose more lives to road carnage,” he pleaded.
