Emotions run high as memorial service for 21 Endarasha pupils is held
The interdenominational memorial service for the 21 victims of the Hillside Endarasha Academy fire tragedy is underway in Nyeri.
The service is taking place at Mwiga Stadium as had earlier been announced by the government.
The 21 died when their dormitory was razed on September 6.
The fire raged through the dormitory of the boarding school, killing the boys who were asleep.
More than 150 pupils were in the dormitory when it caught fire on September 5.
Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and Wiper party Leader Kalonzo Musyoka were among the high-ranking officials who graced the memorial service
Education CS Julius Ogamba and basic education CS Belio Kipsang were the top officials from the Ministry of Education who were present.
Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga, DAP-K Party leader Eugene Wamalwa, Nyeri Senator Wamatinga Wahome and his Kitui counterpart Enoch Wambua, Nyeri Woman Rep Rahab Mukami, MPs Wanaina Njoroge (Kieni), Irene Njoki and former Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu,(Bahati) were also present.
