Education Ministry Urges Flood Preparedness Ahead of School Reopening » Capital News
NAIROBI, Kenya Apr 25 – The Ministry of Education has directed regional education administrators to conduct thorough assessments of the impact of the heavy rains sweeping across Kenya.
The downpours have triggered extensive flooding, particularly in Nairobi, where roads have been submerged and turned into temporary rivers.
More than 60 people have been killed in the past two weeks while over 40,000 others are displaced from their homes.
Against this backdrop, the Ministry of Education is worried this may affect the reopening of schools from Monday.
“The data on the effects of the rains and flooding will be crucial for planning and for sharing with the education in Emergencies cluster working groups,” the ministry emphasized in a statement Thursday, stressing the importance of data collection to evaluate the preparedness of basic education institutions amidst the deluge.
In response to the urgent situation, the Kenya Red Cross has been at the forefront, conducting numerous rescues in heavily affected areas such as Mathare and Githurai 45.
Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki underscored the necessity for collaboration with the Red Cross and Coast Guard to ensure effective evacuation efforts. “County Security Teams are mandated to ensure the compulsory evacuation of individuals in vulnerable areas,” he reiterated.
The government pledges its commitment to deploying necessary financial and public resources to mitigate the adverse impacts of the flooding. “We are committed to providing support to affected regions,” stated CS Kindiki, emphasizing the government’s resolve to address the crisis.
The National Disaster Operations Centre has intensified its efforts to coordinate the multi-agency response, following a presidential directive.
CS Kindiki urged the public to prioritize safety measures and cooperate with emergency teams. “This collaboration is crucial for providing assistance to those in distress,” he emphasized.
State House said Thursday President William Ruto had established a multi-agency government team to effectively manage the crisis, underlining the seriousness of the situation and the need for concerted efforts to safeguard communities amidst the ongoing floods.
