Court declines to release Kangai killer brew suspect on bond » Capital News

KERUGOYA, Kenya, Apr 11 – Kerugoya High Court Judge Richard Mwongo has stated that the bill application of the owner of a bar where seventeen people died and several others were left blind in Kangai and Kandongu villages in Kirinyaga County will be concluded after witnesses identified by the prosecution team are heard within 60 to 90 days.

In his order, Justice Mwongo stated that John Muriithi’s bill application will be heard and ended following the testimony of seven witnesses designated by the prosecution team led by Deputy DPP Vincent Mamba as critical and readily manipulated due to their blindness.

John Muriithi, through his lawyer Kemunto Magara, had applied to be released on bond, where he is charged with two counts: causing the deaths of 17 people in Kangai village and stealing exhibits locked at the Kiamaciri police station.

On March 14, 2024, four police officers from Kiamaciri police station, Francis Mutethia, Allan Kyalo Kimanzi, Brian Karaiuki, former Kiamaciri officer commanding station Kennedy Mugambi, John Muriithi, the owner of California Bar, his brother Anthony Muthee, and the owner of Muiguru Bar at Kandongu, Lydiah Wanjiru, appeared before Kerugoya High Court Judge Justice Richard Mwongo, where they were charged with the murder of 17 people.

Police officers Francis Muteithia, Brian Kariuki, and Kendy Mugambi were each granted Sh1 million in bonds, while Allan Kyalo received Sh500,000.

Lydiah Wanjiru, the proprietor of Muiguiru Bar in Kandongu, was granted a Sh800,000 bond, while Anthony Muthee, John Muriithi’s brother in California, was granted a Sh1 million bond, but John Muriithi was denied .
