Court convicts former Riruta lawmaker of wife’s murder » Capital News

NAIROBI Kenya, Apr 6 — The court has set former Riruta Ward MCA Samuel Njoroge’s sentencing hearing for April 12 after finding him guilty of murdering his ex-wife, Lucy Njambi Nyagiko.

During a hearing on Friday, Justice Joel Ngugi convicted Njoroge and two associates named Joyce Njambi Mungai and Wilson Mwangi Munyua of the murder reported on January 24, 2018, in Kiambu County.

Kidnappers took Njambi from her home in Thindigua and sexually assaulted her before abandoning her, in a critical state, in a coffee plantation near Kamiti corner along the Ruiru-Kiambu road.

Justice Ngugi said the three suspects were responsible for Njambi’s murder beyond reasonable doubt.

He noted the prosecution called 38 witnesses against the accused and the court was satisfied with their presentation of evidence.

“The compelling evidence provided by the prosecution highlighted the excessively jealous nature of the first accused (Samuel Njoroge), who had a history of assaulting the deceased and displaying aggression towards perceived romantic rivals,” Justice Ngugi said.

“The conclusion is that I find that the Prosecution has proved the case against each of the three Accused Persons beyond reasonable doubt and I hereby convict each of the three Accused Persons of the murder of Lucy Njambi Nyagiko as charged,” the Judge said.

The court established that the second accused purchased the sulphuric acid used in the attack while Munyua’s presence at the time of the crime was established through mobile phone data records.

Njambi died on January 26, 2018, at the Kenyatta National Hospital where she was receiving treatment after she was rescued in a coffee plantation.
