Clerics demand accountability from State
The scenes witnessed during the recent protests has sparked public outrage with the Inter-Religious Council of Kenya and Federation of Women Lawyers demanding urgent intervention warning the country could degenerate into anarchy.
The religious body is demanding accountability, an immediate end to violence, and national dialogue to heal what they describe as a wounded nation.
In a bold statement , the religious leaders want President William Ruto to ensure those responsible for the violence and corruption are held accountable.
They have also warned against the manipulation of religion and ethnicity to balkanize the country. The Council is calling for the immediate formation of a Judicial Commission of Inquiry to investigate all protest-related deaths since June even as they offered to mediate between the government and the youth.
This as the Federation of Women Lawyers demanded the Inspector General of Police, Douglas Kanja, to disclose the identities of plainclothes officers involved in the shootings.
Further, they want the Independent Policing Oversight Authority to expedite investigations into police misconduct and release a full report.
