Cardinal Robert Prevost elected Pope, assumes name Pope Leo XIV

Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost has been elected as the new pope, taking the papal name Pope Leo XIV.

Born in Chicago, Illinois, Cardinal Prevost has dedicated over four decades to service in the Church. He was ordained a priest on June 19, 1982, and was later elevated to the episcopate on December 12, 2014.

In September 2023, he was named a cardinal, a pivotal moment in his distinguished career. Most recently, he served as the Prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops and President of the Pontifical Commission for Latin America.
