Bungoma spent Sh25m on flowers on Madaraka Day
Bungoma Governor Kenneth Lusaka has disclosed that Sh25 million was spent on beautifying Bungoma town in preparation for the Madaraka Day celebrations.
Speaking to the press on Friday, Lusaka explained that the beautification efforts included purchasing and planting flowers along the Musikoma-Kanduyi dual-carriageway.
Addressing concerns raised by Generation Z during recent protests, Lusaka revealed that the Bungoma county assembly approved a total expenditure of Sh148 million for the celebrations.
“The money spent during the national function was allocated accordingly,” Lusaka stated.
The expenditure was broken down as follows:
- Education and Vocational Training Centres: Sh1 million
- Renovation of District Centres for Early Childhood Education: Sh1 million
- Roads and Public Works: Sh24 million
- Other Infrastructural Works: Sh6 million
- Billboard and Signage: Sh18 million
- Trade, Energy, and Industrialisation: Sh13 million
- Electricity Bill Payment: Sh13 million
- Lands, Urban, and Physical Planning: Sh25 million
- Gender and Culture: Sh5 million
- Preparation of County Handwork: Sh5 million
- Youth and Sports: Sh60 million
- Completion of Masinde Muliro Stadium: Sh60 million
- Public Service Management and Administration: Sh12 million
- Catering Services (Water, Juice, Soda): Sh4 million
- Advertising, Awareness, and Publicity (Commercial): Sh1 million
- Advertising, Awareness, and Publicity (Digital Communication): Sh1.5 million
- Advertising, Awareness, and Publicity (Jumbo Flag): Sh1 million
- Advertising, Awareness, and Publicity (Miniature Flags): Sh2 million
- Advertising, Awareness, and Publicity (General): Sh2.5 million
- Media Mobilisation and Publicity: Sh8 million
In addition, Lusaka confirmed that Bungoma operates 352 bank accounts, as highlighted in the auditor general’s report. These accounts include:
- Established Public Funds Accounts: 10
- Special Purpose Accounts: NGRIP account, Bungoma Municipality Urban Development Grant account, Kimilili Municipality Special Purpose Account, Retention Account: 9
- Project Management Accounts: Ministry of Water and Tourism: 1
- Subcounty Imprest Accounts: Department of Public Administration in all nine subcounties: 9
- Mabanga ATC Operation Accounts: Ministry of Agriculture: 2
- Level 4 and 5 Hospital Accounts: 19
- Own Source Revenue Collection Accounts: County Treasury: 4
- Vocational Training Centre Accounts: 152
- Health Facility and Dispensary Accounts: All dispensaries and health facilities in the Ministry of Health: 146
Moreover, Lusaka directed the County Executive Committee (CEC) member for Gender, Culture, Youths, and Sports to take a one-month compulsory leave pending investigations into allegations of graft in her department.
