A lorry ferrying sodium cyanide overturned at Kambembe area of Rironi in Kiambu County spilling drums containing the highly poisonous substance.

Confirming the accident, the Kiambu Base Commander Aggripina Lugonzo said the accident was self-involved.

The Base Commander noted that on noticing that the cargo was a chemical substance that could be highly toxic, quickly mobilized colleagues including the Limuru OCS to help in securing the accident scene until when the truck had been cleared by experts who may handle the cargo professionally.

Lugonzo said the transporting company has been contacted and has sent another truck to collect the cylinders.

Sodium Cyanide is a solution used to extract metal ores, clean baths, and harden metal as well as used in making insecticides.

Sodium Cyanide is highly toxic and can affect breathing if inhaled and can also be absorbed through the skin. When in contact the highly toxic substance can irritate the skin and eyes.

Dangers of Sodium Cyanide

  1. Toxicity and Poisoning Sodium cyanide is extremely toxic. Ingestion or inhalation of even small amounts can be fatal, causing immediate symptoms such as headache, dizziness, shortness of breath, nausea, and vomiting. Severe exposure can lead to loss of consciousness and convulsions within minutes. Prolonged or repeated exposure to lower levels can result in long-term health issues, including neurological damage, thyroid dysfunction, and cardiovascular problems.
  2. Environmental Hazards Sodium cyanide poses a significant threat to aquatic life. Accidental release into waterways can cause extensive fish kills and long-term damage to aquatic ecosystems. Although sodium cyanide can degrade over time, its initial impact is often devastating.
  3. Protective Measures Proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as gloves, masks, and eye protection is essential when handling sodium cyanide to prevent direct exposure. Adequate ventilation and spill containment systems are crucial in environments where sodium cyanide is handled or present. Thorough training on its hazards and emergency response procedures is mandatory for anyone who may need to handle sodium cyanide. Immediate access to antidotes is vital in case of any form of poisoning.
