Transparency International Kenya defends civil society amid gov’t allegations
Transparency International Kenya has issued a strong defence of civil society organizations (CSOs) in reaction to recent government claims that they are funding protests.
Responding to the government’s recent letter suggesting that CSOs are involved in funding and supporting unlawful activities, Transparency International Kenya expressed deep concern.
They rejected these accusations, describing them as baseless and counterproductive.
The organization asserted that CSOs have consistently condemned lawlessness and violence, and argued that the allegations serve to undermine the significant contributions of these organizations and damage their reputation.
In their statement, the organization highlighted the indispensable role that CSOs have played in Kenya’s development, emphasizing their efforts to protect democratic values, amplify the voices of vulnerable communities, and uphold human rights.
The organization noted that CSOs have been crucial in promoting transparency and accountability for decades.
“They have addressed various critical issues, including public finance management, human rights, and government accountability. Their advocacy has been essential in combating extrajudicial executions, enforced disappearances, and theft of public resources.”
The recent protests, according to Transparency International Kenya, reflect a growing public demand for a more accountable and transparent government.
The statement also underlined the critical role CSOs have played in recent crises.
They pointed out that these organizations have provided essential services such as legal aid, medical assistance, and psychosocial support to affected individuals.
They also emphasized that such work should not be misinterpreted as support for illegal activities.
Additionally, the organization defended the role of young people, particularly those from the Gen Z generation, against claims that they are financially motivated to protest.
Transparency International Kenya asserted that the youth’s involvement in advocating for positive change is genuine and deserves recognition and respect.
The organization condemned recent violent crackdowns, abductions, and threats against individuals expressing concerns about governance and human rights. They called for an end to the intimidation and harassment of CSOs, media, and human rights defenders.
In conclusion, Transparency International Kenya urged the government to uphold the constitution, protect peaceful protest and freedom of expression, and ensure accountability in public finance and anti-corruption measures as they reaffirmed their commitment to supporting democracy and human rights, advocating for continued active citizenship and open channels for public participation.
